The
Aphrodesiac in a Jewel Box!
Nothing, but
nothing, gets me going better than listening to the Al Green's Greatest Hits
cd.
Nothing.
As a pre-teen,
I used to listen to KDIA, a soul/R&B radio station from nearby Oakland,
in bed at night.
Oakland, soul,
and R&B were all about as foreign to my lily-white suburban culture as
Mandarin
Chinese, but
I knew what I liked! And I liked Al Green. Oh, Lord, did I like Al
Green.
That gorgeous
voice could insinuate its way around a lyric like water, effortlessly and
seamlessly, and
when he sang
about loving and wanting someone, I knew he didn't mean he wanted to be her
best
buddy. *shudder*
That voice lit my innocent little world on fire.
If Aretha Franklin
sang about love with a Gospel fervor, Al Green sang about sex with the same
passionate
intensity. Thank the Goddess for radios with good antennas...
The Reverend
Al Green performed some of the best make-out music ever made. And he
was one fine
brother, too.
Here's a sample of one of my favorites:
HERE I AM
(COME AND TAKE ME)
(A. Green,
T. Hodges)
From the album:
"Call Me"
I can't believe that it's real,
the way that
you make me feel.
A burning
deep down inside,
a love that
I cannot hide.
Our love
is you and me baby,
that makes
the world go round.
And if you've
been doin' lovin' with me,
layin' all
my troubles down,
(Chorus)
here I am,
baby,
come and
take me
Here I am,
baby,
come and
take me,
Show me,
here I am,
baby.
It always
ends up this way,
me begging
you every day.
A love that
I cannot have,
you broke my
heart into half.
Our love
is you and me baby,
that make's
the world go round.
And if you've
been doin' lovin' with me,
layin' all
my troubles down,
(repeat
Chorus)
When I'm
down I can always call you,
for a helpin'
hand.
I know you'll
do the best you can.
But it don't
take much from me,
just my
cup of joe.
Oh there's
love inside me,
I believe
there's one to be explodin',
It's tough
for me, oh baby,
I can do
worry,
tell me all
your troubles.
You won't
ever have to worry now,
Just one more
thing, ask everybody,
everybody
you see,
you'll find
yourselve lost and alone on a darkened street,
here I am,
baby,
(repeat Chorus,
fade)
A great
site about Al Green.
